Question 2 Why Ethiopia? answered

We want to let you know a little bit about why we picked Ethiopia, and international adoption period. First, domestic adoption can be uncertain process, based on a number of factors that I won't go into right now. At this point in our lives we are not really prepared for that but it could be a possibility for us in the future.

So then it comes down to what international countries we are qualified for based on Age, Length of Marriage, and Country/Agency guidelines. We met all the requirements for 3 countries, Ethiopia being one of them.

From there we looked at number of orphans in each country, and cost/length of adoption. Ethiopia has 75 million people and because of famine, conflict, and disease they have an estimated 5 million orphans, um... excuse me... WOW, one of the largest orphan populations in the world.

Last year 1,724 of these children were adopted to the US. That's only .0003 percent.
1 in 10 children there die before their 1st birthday
1 in 6 children die before their 5th birthday
Half the children in Ethiopia will never attend school
60% of children in Ethiopia are stunted because of malnutrition
1/3 of the population survive on less than $1 a day
(thanks for letting me steal the stats Rebekah!)

Astounded yet? Well this is our call to action as believers in Christ, James 1:27, Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

5 million orphans, minus one.

  1. You left off the point that Ethiopian babies are the cutest :)

No worries, I definitely stole those stats off another blog first :)

  2. Can I steal that to make a flyer for school. Plus, I say all the grandkids God blesses me with through adoption or biologically will be the cutest on the planet.

    Love a future grandma :)

I so love your comments :)
